Independence Falls, Colorado. 1954. It was the start of a perfect summer--until the fog rolled in and changed everything. Now these heroes will explore their newfound abilities ... and each other.
June Powell's mother has one wish that June marry into one of Independence Falls’ finest families so she can take the place in society her mother could never achieve. June has different dreams. Dreams she’s never shared for fear of upsetting her family. She longs to escape her small town to explore the great wide world she only knows from books. When she discovers she can walk through walls, her first instinct is to hide her power. What would people say if they knew? But then odd thoughts start appearing in her head ... thoughts not her own ... thoughts that could ruin more than her reputation. For June to survive, she’ll need to stop caring what others think of her once and for all.
Ivan Sokolov has always been an outsider. His family emigrated from Russia in hopes of a better life, only to find themselves shunned. As the Cold War gains steam, Ivan knows most people think of him as a Communist, or worse. It wouldn't bother him if it weren't for June Powell. As much as he hates admitting a woman can affect him so much, he longs for her to see him instead of his heritage. As his yearning grows, so does his power. But June needs more than a lover ... she needs protection.
June and Ivan aren't the only ones in Independence Falls who have mysterious new abilities. If they’re not careful, the whole town will know the truth. And not everyone intends to use their powers for good.

'Exposed' is the second book in Lily Cahill's Independence Falls Superhero series. I first encountered the series with a free copy of the first book, and was sufficiently hooked to go back and buy this second entry in the series. I'm happy to report that 'Exposed' was well worth the money. The story is well plotted and well written, with interesting and fully-fleshed characters. I will admit that the story had one subplot that I wasn't thrilled with (in the name of No Spoilers I will decline to describe it), but that speaks more to my own prejudices than to any weakness in the story. I would heartily recommend this excellent series.Product details

Exposed Independence Falls Superhero Romance Book 2 eBook Lily Cahill Reviews
I'm falling more and more in love with this series as it goes on. And can I just say how gorgeous all these book covers are?
While its prequel, Sparked, was rather slow-paced and mainly about the love story between Clayton and Cora, Exposed has a lot more action in it. We get a real antagonist in this one, some twists, and a bunch of new, more or less important sidekicks, as the mystery surrounding the characters' superpowers becomes a more prominent aspect of the story.
Still, we get our fair share of romance between our two main characters, June and Ivan. Ivan was particularly intriguing to me. A broody, sullen but misunderstood outcast who doesn't realize how lonely he is until June stumbles into his life - quite literally, in fact. There's a lot of push-and-pull going on, a few misunderstandings, creating a little unnecessary drama, but I didn't really mind. It was believable, considering Ivan's past experiences and June's upbringing.
I loved Ivan's power. There was something incredibly romantic about him being able to grow flowers and control greenery. And it was so at odds with his otherwise angry and hostile demeanor.
Really enjoyed this one. This series deserves a lot more attention.
This story takes during the 1950’s when many Americans were highly suspicious of Russians living in the U.S. The disdain to which Ivan’s family has endured has scared him and turned him into a hard and bitter man. At first, his gruff nature was very off-putting. Despite this, some continue to offer him kindness that he fails to see. It isn’t until June starts chipping away at his attitude does he find a way to smile.
Ivan is attracted to June. “Why was she so embedded inside of him? This woman with whom he’d shared a handful of heated words. Maybe because she hadn’t balked. She hadn’t backed away from his hard glare. There was determination in her face, courage in her eyes.”
June is not without her own personal challenges. She must break away from her ever pleasing attitude and not constantly succumb to other’s expectations.
Like many other romances, misunderstandings tear the lovers apart. But what was unique here was the deeply rooted understanding between them that wills them together.
The “superhero” aspect in this book becomes a more prominent piece of the story. Sorry but I’m not going to spoil the story line and give away too much.
I do love the romantic use of Ivan’s ability to make flowers grow. He wants to bring flowers to June, but not just any ordinary flower. He puts a lot of thought into what would be a perfect flower choice. “June’s flower wasn’t anything he’d find in a greenhouse, or a florist’s shop, or even in a meadow. June was singular, and she could only be contained in the bloom of his power.”
A man willing to put that much thought into a gift for a woman is the epitome of romance!
The last man a social climber in the 1950’s wants their daughter to end up with is the Russian boy, his heritage making him a virtual social outcast and a target for suspicion. But, June’s ideas about what she wants out of life and her mother’s aren’t exactly in sync. June and Ivan butt heads a lot in the beginning, but even through the fighting the attraction is undeniable. June is struggling with others expectations and her social image, while Ivan is struggling with the ability to trust or see good in the people beyond his family. This focuses so much on internal struggle and overcoming your own shortcomings. I loved the way Ivan and June challenged each other to become better people, and supported each other as they strived to do that. Great read and I look forward to reading Ruth’s story in Ignited! Be sure to check out the Exposed Bonus Story (in-law introduction dinner short) available as a free download on the Author’s website. Love the bonus stories!
Note This book was provided to me by the author for an honest review.
This engaging book builds on the previous one, adding additional characters with new powers and attractions. While this is not my usual literature genre, I got really hooked. Don't miss out because it's not your usual read.
My return to Independence Falls left me just as satisfied, if not more, than book one of the series. Throughout the follow up story to "Sparked", I think the author did a great job of really taking me back to 1954. The story of June, the seemingly quintessential All-American girl, really got me hooked. I think most people have felt like June at some point in their life - expected to fit in to a perfect mold. Thanks to her new found ability, her character becomes a strong and independent thinker. I really enjoyed following her evolution and romance with Ivan....Oh, Ivan. Dark and troubled and a town outsider, he was such a contrast to June. While his exterior shell may leave you wondering why someone would fall for him, his burgeoning power opens a window into his depth. Just like book one, their romance is fast but when you have a man like Ivan, it's to be expected.
Now that we know there are several people affected by the fog, the story of will their secrets remain intact and what caused their powers really starts to pick up. Keep reading because it's getting better and better!
